Marvel’s What If…? streamed its Season One finale this week and Marvel fans are wondering how much the first animated series produced by Marvel Studios will impact the future of the MCU. But in a recent interview, director Bryan Andrews revealed they had planned for Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa/Star-Lord to spin off into his own series.

The series gave the first glimpse into the new Marvel Multiverse that was set up in Loki starring Tom Hiddleston as everyone’s favorite trickster god. It brought together characters from throughout the Marvel Universe like Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.
Some actors like Robert Downing Jr. and Tom Holland did not reprise their roles as Tony Stark/ Iron Man and Peter Parker/ Spider-Man. However, What If…? did have Chadwick Boseman return to voice T’Challa before his tragic death due to colon cancer. The series marked his final appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What If…? director Bryan Andrews revealed to Variety that before Chadwick Boseman passed they had planned an entire series about the Star-Lord version of T’Challa introduced in Episode 2 “What If…T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?”. Andrews said:
“I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and crew. We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”
Now Marvel fans will never get a chance to see more of the version of T’Challa who stopped Thanos (Josh Brolin) by talking to him.

Chadwick’s T’Challa/Star-Lord went on to appear in the final episode of What If…? Season One “What If…The Watcher Broke His Oath.” And played a version of T’Challa as the Black Panther in episode 6 “What If…Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?”
The finale left many questions on how much this series will impact the great Marvel Cinematic Universe. A leaked concept image from Doctor Strange shows an Ultron sentry but whether that sentry is connected to the Infinity Ultron (Ross Marquand) seen in What If…? remains to be seen.

There are rumors that Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) will return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And that she will return in season two of What If..? alongside other characters introduced in Marvel’s Phase 4 like Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and perhaps Eternals characters like Ikaris (Richard Madden).
Marvel Studios has not said whether T’Challa could return with a different voice actor. But for now, the touching tribute given in What If…? could be the last time Marvel fans see the King of T’Challa, and Andrews revealed how lucky they were to get Chadwick for What If…? saying:
Chadwick had recorded his Star Lord T’Challa stuff early. […] And it was not long after the final recording that he passed. I think it was maybe just a few months, or a month. None of us knew, obviously. But we got him in time to have everything [for Season 1]. I think he was also trying to make an effort because T’Challa was so important to him — and also this new version of Star Lord T’Challa was so important to him.
Marvel fans can expect more tributes to Chadwick Boseman in the Black Panther (2018) sequel Wakanda Forever which will hit theaters on July 8, 2022, starring Letitia Wright as Shuri, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Angela Bassett as Queen Ramonda, and introducing Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams aka Iron Heart.
