Is Marvel Studios Finally Giving Hulk His Own Movie? – Inside the Magic

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen many successful movies based on individual heroes.
From Iron Man (2008) starring Robert Downey Jr., to the recent Black Widow (2021) starring Scarlett Johannson and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), Marvel Studios has developed its universe with incredible backstories of fan-favorite characters from Marvel Comics.
Even Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, and Anthony Mackie’s Falcon have starred in popular Disney+ television series in the last year.
There has still, however, not been a single solo Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) project in the MCU since his 2008 outing in The Incredible Hulk (which starred Edward Norton as the titular character, before Ruffalo took on the role in the MCU). He has been a vital Avenger in various fights to save the world, particularly in the battle against Thanos in Avengers Endgame (2019), in which Banner had managed to balance his two sides with gamma experimentation, enabling him to become the Professor Hulk comic book identity.
Now Geeks World Wide has reported that Marvel Studios is rumored to be starting production on a solo Hulk movie next year:
The GWW has learned that a Hulk movie is on the way and it is currently being called, World War Hulk. Yes, we are finally have a new “solo” Hulk film in active development at Marvel Studios and we were told it is currently slated to start production in late 2022, likely following the events of the upcoming She-Hulk series on Disney +.
If this is proven to be correct, it looks like Marvel fans can look forward to Mark Ruffalo starring in his first titular Marvel Studios movie, something he reportedly has been wanting to happen.
Bruce Banner’s origin movie, starring Edward Norton, was distributed by Universal Studios in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Universal owned the distribution rights to the character, but not the ability to make a movie about the character himself. Those particular rights still belonged to Marvel Studios. Geeks World Wide adds:
If our source is accurate (which luckily they have been) a new Hulk film means Marvel/Disney have regained the rights and World War Hulk may only be the first in a series of Hulk films to come.
World War Hulk is a comic book series published from May to November 2007. It serves as a sequel to another popular Hulk story, Planet Hulk, partially adapted in the 2017 movie Thor: Ragnarok, starring Chris Hemsworth.
The comic’s story follows Hulk coming back to Earth seeking revenge on the Illuminati, who are rumored to be appearing in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
Geeks World Wide continues, saying:
“…this film is also said to be yet another piece in the puzzle that also sets up a future film project [they] hope to reveal later.”
It will be interesting to see how the Disney+ upcoming television series She-Hulk will lead into this Mark Ruffalo movie. Premiering in 2022 with ten episodes, the series stars Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Anais Almonte and Josh Segarra.
We’ll keep you posted with any more updates on this Marvel Studios rumor.
