Lately, you may have seen a few balloon displays around town at places like the Ewert Recreation Center, Pizza Ranch, bowling alley and the high school and elementary. These creations are the work of a new business in town, Precious Balloons by Jackie. Some of the types of balloon creations the business specializes in are balloon bouquets and décor for the home or office, and for a variety of occasions; surprise bouquets, baby showers, anniversaries, banquets, birthdays, graduations, or anything with festivity. Jacqueline Quilantan-Elias, the owner of the balloon art creation company, said that she first started promoting her work this month and that the pandemic inspired her to pursue the art.
“The beginning of October is when I promoted myself to the public,” she said. “I really got inspired by the pandemic. I would watch all these videos of balloon set ups and I figured why not give it a try? From there I tried out different balloon creations and I enjoyed it so much. I was inspired to bring this business into Pipestone.”
Quilantan-Elias said that she enjoys the creativity and artistic aspect of working with balloons, and that she has had the opportunity to make character balloon bouquets like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, as well as birthday and anniversary bouquets.
Typically, it takes Quilantan-Elias anywhere between an hour and a half to three hours to create a balloon bouquet, depending on the size of the project. Many of her ideas are theme based, and she seeks much of her inspiration from the internet. Quilantan-Elias said that at least a two week’s notice is best so that she can order in balloons that are appropriate for the occasion, and that she works to provide individualized quotes for the variety of orders she receives which can vary in size and difficulty.
“Two weeks ahead of an event would be best, within one week I will do my very best to get that on time,” she said. “I also go by quotes. I really want to accomplish anything that the consumer may want.”
Quilantan-Elias, who moved to Pipestone from south Texas about four years ago, said that outside of her balloon art business she works at JBS and is attending Minnesota West and will begin training as an EMT on November 1.
“I am really excited for that (becoming an EMT),” she said. “I’ve worked at JBS for about eight months now. I like it, but as much as I doubted myself, something in my heart really wanted to pursue the first step into starting my own business. At first, I was really afraid of taking the first step for this balloon business, I was afraid of rejection or not being taken seriously, but my heart kept giving me the courage to put myself out there. I’m really proud of myself and I’m so thankful that the Pipestone public has received me so well.”
