Deadline first broke the huge casting news, reporting that Will Poulter had been cast as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios, according to insiders. Director James Gunn later confirmed the rumors on his Twitter account, welcoming Will Poulter to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying,
As you guys know I often strike down false rumors, so… um… Welcome to the Guardians family, Will Poulter. He’s an amazing actor and wonderful guy. See you in a couple weeks. #AdamWarlock #GotGVol3″

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will produce Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with Gunn returning to direct the third installment. Gunn has been the main creative force behind Guardians since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn was famously fired by Disney when past offensive Tweets by the director were uncovered. After working with Warner Bros. on the DC Universe properties The Suicide Squad (2021) and the upcoming spinoff series Peacemaker starring John Cena, Gunn is has rejoined Marvel Studios to complete his trilogy.
Will Poulter responded to his new boss, sharing his excitement for the opportunity, saying,
“Thank you, James. It’s a genuine honour to play this role and to work with you. I’m very excied to get to work.”

Will Poulter is best known for his film roles in The Revenant (2016) and Detroit (2017), as well as his roles on the Amazon series The Underground Railroad. Poulter also stars opposite Michael Keaton in the upcoming Hulu series from Disney-owned 20th Television, Dopesick.

However, fans on Twitter have mostly been recalling the actor’s comedic turn in the Jason Sudekis and Jennifer Aniston 2013 comedy, We’re the Millers. In that movie, a young Poulter played an awkward teen and cracked up audiences with his sweet naivety — and his rap skills as he broke down TLC’s famous hit “Waterfalls.”

Twitter user Tyler Hanley said he’s having trouble picturing the kid from We’re the Millers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a powerful, godlike being, but he trusts director James Gunn. He shared,
“A bit hard to imagine the kid from “We’re the Millers” playing Adam Warlock, but I have the utmost faith in Gunn picking the right guy (and Poulter was terrific in Millers). Can’t wait for this one! #GotGVol3″

Twitter user Jonathan reminded Marvel fans that if Chris Pratt and Eternals (2021) star Kumail Nanjiani could transform into Marvel heroes, then certainly Poulter could too, sharing,
“people seem to hate the idea of Will as Adam because of his accents in Narnia or We’re The Millers. If they watch him on the Maze Runner I can totally see the “ADAM WARLOCK”. The MCU team can turn the likes of Kumail Nanjiani/Chris Pratt into specimens it’s easy work for Will.”

While the reaction to Poulter’s casting as Adam Warlock was mostly optimistic, some fans hoped to see Baywatch (2017) actor Zac Efron cast in the role. Zac Efron has been a popular choice among Marvel fans for Guardians 3 ever since Adam Warlock had been teased. Twitter user Damerino44 replied to Gunn’s casting news with a fan edit of Zac Efron as Adam Warlock, Tweeting simply,

In Marvel Comics, Adam Warlock was created by a group of scientists to be a perfect, invincible being. In the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the golden high priestess of the Sovereign sits near a birthing pod, saying that the being inside — Adam — is the next step in the evolution of the Sovereign, describing him as “…more powerful, more beautiful, more capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy.” With plot details being kept very hush-hush, it remains to be seen if Poulter’s Adam Warlock will wind up being friend or foe to the Guardians in Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is likely director James Gunn’s final go with the Guardians franchise, as the director has indicated the film will conclude his trilogy. Actor Dave Bautista has also said that Guardians Vol.3 will be his last turn as the shirtless warrior Drax. Will Poulter’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond Vol. 3 is anybody’s guess.
