There is still a possibility that he’ll be reprising his most famous role in the MCU.
Hugh Jackman is still in fantastic shape at 53, as his Instagram can attest, but the actor just shared a throwback photo to when he was at his most swole. The pic shows Jackman completing a heavy deadlift, with his biceps bulging, as part of his intense prep for one of the X-Men movies, in which he played the mutant superhero Wolverine.
“Is it just me,” Jackman wrote in the caption, “or does this guy look like he’s in serious pain?!”
Jackman was one of the first actors in Hollywood to popularize the “superhero shred” body transformation, and over a decade of X-Men films, his physique became more and more muscular until Jackman the actor became almost indistinguishable from the brawny, brooding hero he played.
And while it’s easy to believe that both Jackman and Logan could easily deadlift a car when at their physical peak, Jackman recently revealed that the key to his X-Men training was to go easy, starting out with lighter weights. He told Peter Attia in an interview that he took a bodybuilder’s advice, and it has helped him progress in his workouts to this day.
Naturally, any time an actor references one of their most iconic parts despite supposedly being “done,” the online rumor mill goes into overdrive, and this is no different. With mutants now available for use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing some familiar heroes on our screens again. And as one of the most popular X-Men characters, both on the page and on-screen, casting choices for Wolverine have been a popular topic of conversation, with some believing that Jackman will be reprising the role.
This isn’t even the first time Jackman has trolled Wolverine fans with an entirely noncommittal, open-to-interpretation social media post. Earlier this year, he shared a selfie with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige to his Instagram Story, prompting mass speculation that Jackman might be accompanying Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds into the MCU now that Fox has relinquished the rights to the characters.
